Alpaca Fiber World
Why We Choose Alpaca...
Since ancient times, alpaca fleece was cherished by members of the Incan civilization in the South
American Andes where their graceful herds roamed the lush foothills and mountainous pastures. The
Incan people called it "The Fiber of the Gods". In the 17th century, Spanish conquistadors killed most of
both the Incan and alpaca populations, forcing survivors to seek refuge in high mountains known as the
"Altiplano". The unyielding landscape caused only the fittest alpacas to survive, so the ancestors of
today's best bloodlines have provided the gene pool producing hardy, nimble animals with dense, high
quality fiber. In 1984, a group of importers brought a carefully selected herd of the best quality alpacas
into the United States and Canada, where they became a beloved part of the North American scenerey.
Their are two types of alpacas that are differentiated only by their fiber type. The suri has long and silky
pencil-like locks. Where the huacaya has a comparatively short, dense and crimpy fleece that gives it a
woolly appearance.
"Royal Alpaca", the premiere fiber comes from the cria (baby alpaca) during the herds yearly shearing.
Royal fiber is coveted as an alpaca's gestation period is 11 to 12 months yielding a single cria (twins are
extremely rare). A cria usually weighs between 15 to 20 pounds and produces a small amount of fiber.
Alpaca fiber comes in 22 colors that are recognized by the textile industry of which their are many
blends. Per year, each alpaca will produce 5 to 10 pounds of soft, warm fiber that is turned into the most
luxurious garments in the world. "When it comes to wearing alpaca, you
are wrapped in the world of the exotic." Debra Yancey
