X of Cups,

Well, Hello again, I have a new deck, The Art Nouveau, by Lo Scarabeo. Its a very beautifal deck. I wanted to use it for this weeks card, and cut the cards and got the 10 of Cups. One of the more lovely images of the deck. Rather than take up space with a side bar, click here, to jump to a review of the deck.

Ok so lets talk about the 10 of Cups. The 10 of cups represents the maturity of a relationship. The couple we met in the 2 of cups, has now grown up, they have raised the next generation, they have prospered, and they still are very much in love. Isn't that 'The dream', isn't that a dream worth living for everyday. Look at the dreams our culture puts out nowadays. Theres the "Rap Dream" "Bitches aint nothing but Ho's and Tricks, ..." Thats a dream to aspire too, to "have" a long line of women that you dont care about. Theres the corperate dream, To have the beautifal elegent woman, who is as much a part of your "look" as your Rolex, Lexus, or Furnishings from Pier One. Which is Ultimately what she is, a beautifal throw cushion, for your couch. If I had a ticket in my hands, here take this, it will make you a business superman, but it will destroy your relationships for the rest of your life, would you take the ticket. Isn't the ticket out their, how many of us are chasing the ticket.

I'm sorry if the essay appears sexist, the dreams are sexist. The Rap dream is a sexist dream. The Corperate Dream is a sexist dream. When I was 21 the Feminist dream, the dream that men and women where equal was very much alive. Now it has faded, why is a book I can hardly cram into this essay. So hard to stay on topic today, The Latino Couple in Melanies card is perfect for me. Latino Culture is keeping alive the family dream. Singers men and women keep alive La pasión, a vision of deep abiding consuming love. In Anglo culture, if a story is a love story, its automatically a "chick movie". Nothing for MEN here. As a guy, I have to admit, most of the chick movies I do see depict men I can't possibly relate too. Makes me miss the Waltons, John and Olivia where so real, and loved each other so deeply. They were on primetime in my childhood, and I could not watch that square stuff. In my 20's I did start to watch and realized there was so much there I had been too young to appreciate in my teens. Their struggle to survive in the Great Depression, was one of the few truely adult stories I have ever seen on television, or cinema for that matter. Throughout that struggle they had each other, they almost never talked about their, "relationship", they felt no need to, the one constant in each life was the other. Two people utterly in love, and utterly commited to two things, each other, and the one thing the both put above themselves, their children. Stories about the real struggles of real adult life, seem to me to be in short supply. The struggle to raise a family, to pass on some wisdom, and some wealth to our children, doesn't seem to hold our attention. Certainly not many stories about real familys are on offer. Of course there are an endless string of sitcoms, about Dad or Mom as buffoon. Im not going there, Im thinking of John and Olivia, solid people with real problems. The Cozbies, another good example, alot of thoughtful writing in that show. Stories about people you might actually meet, not dimbulbs who cant think their way out of a paper bag.

The couple in the Lo Scarabeo Card, is just as likely, as Melanies, as yours or mine, what matters is they are still together. Their love has surivived the trials of a generation intact, enriched by what they have overcome together. So lets leave a quite moment to the music, while our couples, dance, embrace, and appreciate the magik in each others eyes.

Divination: Domestic Bliss, Honor, Lasting Happiness, Good Family, Peace, Love, Esteem, Virtue.

Reversed: Loss of Friendship, Unhappiness, Family Quarrels, Pettiness, Rage, Conflict of Opinions, Disfuntional Family Life, Stagnation.
