Why Don't Mobile Phone Carriers Offer Inexpensive Data-Only Plans?

T-Mobile Affordable Sidekick Data PlanStone Deaf Pilots has a nice writeup about AT&T Wireless stepping in it when it offered a data-only wireless plan, but only for deaf customers. After complaints from the hearing community about discrimination, AT&T shelved the offer, promising to come back later with a wireless-only plan for everyone. It's crazy AT&T and all the other carriers for that matter don't offer inexpensive data-only plans for everyone. AT&T used to offer a very reasonable data-only plan with a nifty little device called the OGO. But that seems to have disappeared. T-Mobile is the only carrier offering a reasonably priced data-only plan for its Sidekick products. I have a Verizon family plan for the mobile phones and find text messaging useful, but I may actually get a T-Mobile account and Sidekick as well for email, instant messaging, and text messaging because, believe it or not, I think it will be less expensive than getting the data option added to my Verizon Wireless account.

I have a 10 year old who is Deaf and I would love a text-only plan for her. We also have AT&T. My husband and I have Pantech Duo's that she uses when she is with us, but I'd like for her to have something of her own and she'll be wanting one soon. We have discussed changing to T-mobile just for the Sidekick for her, but we haven't done it yet. I wish AT&T would offer something. Believe me, they have heard that from me on numerous occasions.

There are five of us in my family and I'd love to find a family data-only plan that would keep our costs down. I don't think one exists.

I have AT&T for a Blackberry Curve that I just purchased in the last 6 months. The girl who programmed the BB for me left out "voice" but left everything else intact. I don't need or want any of the music, nothing, just email and text. And I have to pay $63.00 a month! I know this is a bit steep for many deafies who are still in college, etc. Changes need to be made.

As for T-mobile, it does not reach many places and is virtually useless in my area.

Thanks, Lantana

What mobiles that at&t's TAP accepting are:
at&t Tilt aka 8925
at&t 8525
Samsung Blackjack
Samsung Blackjack 2
Motorola q9
Pantech Duo
Treo 750
Treo 680

iPhone - coming up
Treo 500 - coming up(i think)

are those mobiles enough that att offer you for TAP?

david,

have you read a comment in stone deafpolits blogs that said that at&t mobility does offer TAP(text accessibility plan) to dead subscribers. TAP accepts alot of mobiles with windows mobile, Treo mobiles. at&t mobility offers tap 1 for 30 dollars includes unlimited data and 5000 text msgs and tap 2 for 35 dollars includes unlimited data and unlimited text msgs. at&t's I-Phone's TAP is coming up very soon. Tmobile does offer only one plan for sidekick models - 30 dollars, but does Tmobile offer more than that type of mobile for that 30 dollars ? i dont think so because my deaf friend who hates sidekick has Tmobile Wing with unlimited data plan. he said 45 dollars a month which isnt bad. Sprint does offer deaf plan - 30 bucks a month. i dont know much about Verizon Wireless however i believe Verizon Wireless does offer the deaf plan as well. i have at&t tilt with at&t mobility service and i am very happy and very satisfied with at&t network that i can travel around the world with my mobile. i have alot of friends in my town have at&t mobiity services. i keep asking them and they are happy with the service. i dont understand why deaf people complain about the expensive plans. they need to research carefully that those wireless carriers do offer the deaf plans. at&t does offer alot of different mobiles to deaf subscribers.

check on at&t's TAP link - http://www.wireless.att.com/about/disability-resources/hearing-aid-compatibility.jsp#tap

MY SUGGEST WHY NOT CHANGE TOPIC "" MOBLEPHONE CHANGE NAME "DEAF MOBLE PAGER USEONLY " THEN THERE WILL BE NO COMPLAINTS THAT WILL LESS COST WITH OUT SCREEN VOICE THAT DEAF MOBLE PAGER WILL BE GOOD SERVICE OUR COST SO SPIRIT BUINESS WILL KNOW DEAF PERSON USE DEAF MOBLE PAGER TO IDENTIFY PERSON USE PAGER MORE EASIER WE SHOULD RESQUEST MOBLE COMPANY WILL UNDERSTAND BETTER SYSTEM. IF THERE IS MAKE ONE. THEN I BUY ONE MYSELF BECAUSE HAPPEN BEFORE ME THEY RANG TO ME THAT HEARING TOLD ME IT RING I SAID I CANNOT HEAR AND IN FOUND OUT IT COST ME MORE MONEY BECAUSE OF RING COST SO I DUMP IT BUINESS. NO LONGER USE T MOBLE. THAT WHY I THINK IT IS DIRTY BUINESS THEY THINK I AM HEARING PERSON I SAID I AM DEAF THEY SAID GOSH I AM SORRY I DID NOT KNOW. SO TIME TO CHANGE DEAF MOBLE PAGER USE ONLY IS BETTER WAY.

Hello! I am also a Verizon user paying $49.95 per month for unlimited access with Treo 700p. But as far as I know...T-Mobile recently increased its unlimited plan by ten dollars up to $39.95 per month instead of $29.95 the usual price for the deaf sidekick users. Maybe they do still offer that 29.95 deal for the deaf, I dont know.

Right now..at this writing...Sprint and T-Mobile are the only ones that offer low prices as compared to other companies. I hope Verizon would do the same soon but if not...I am considering to leave Verizon this summer when my two year contract is up.

I might lean toward Sprint for their attractive deal..$29.95 per month for all you can eat buffer consisting of texting (yes..SMS, Internet usage, tethering modem, and all that. Along with tremendous rebates for a new Palm Centro device. And of course it has a great coverage just like Verizon.
