Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson by Samuel Shaver

The painting hangs in the Andrew Johnson Homestead in Greeneville.

From a postcard

Johnson is buried at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville, TN. I visited there on June 29, 2007.

I had to go to a conference in San Antonio, TX, so I decide to drive with my family. During the trip, I hoped to see six presidential graves.

We stayed the previous night near the New River Gorge in West Virginia. We got up early and explored the Gorge for a little while, but unfortunately, the visitors center was closed. We then left for a couple hour journey to Greeneville. We got to Greeneville about 11:30 a.m. and checked out the Museum. We knew time was tight, so we hurried up took a couple of pictures of some Johnson's houses around the Visitors Center and we were off to the grave.

Johnson is buried at the top of a giant hill in the cemetery. Its pretty easy to find. His relatives are still being buried in the family plot. The cemetery is still active and there was a funeral going on.

We took our pictures, shot our video and were on our way to the Hermitage.
