Lyndon Baines Johnson

From a postcard

Johnson is buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Stonewall, Texas. I visited there on July 3, 2007.

After I visited Garner's grave, I spent the night at a hotel about 15 miles from the LBJ Ranch. We got there about 10:00 a.m. and just missed the first tour. We bought our tickets for the next one and to kill time we visited the living history museum located on the grounds. The museum interprets farm life in early 1900s hill country of Texas.

The park is a combination National Historic Park and State Park. The bus tour first takes you to the reconstructed birthplace. Then you walk across the street to the family cemetery. The cemetery is still owned by the Johnson family, so you can only go up to the wall surrounding it. I have a zoom lens on my digital camera, but the photos still didn't come out that great. What I should have done is went to the graveyard while the tour was at the birthplace and jumped the 2 1/2 foot high fence and got a closer picture.

After visiting the cemetery, we took the bus to and went around the Texas White House. Mrs. Johnson still owners the house and although she lives in Austin, sometimes she still comes out for the weekend. She wasn't there on that day. Since she still owns the house, you can not go inside or leave the bus. Eventually, it will be turned over to the National Park Service.

After the tour we drove to Johnson City, where we visited LBJ's boyhood home.

The Texas hill country is a beautiful part of the country and I recommend a drive through it.
