Rutherford B. Hayes

I visited the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio on September 21, 1998.

My friend Scott, and I took off for a long weekend to visit Northern Ohio Presidential Sites. This was the forth and final gravesite of the weekend.

We stayed the previous night in a tent at a camping area  on the side of the road about a mile outside of Fremont. It started pouring rain and thundering and lightening out. We got pretty nervous because a few weeks before, some people were killed when their tent was hit by lightening at a campground near my house. Needless to say, we had to spend the night in the back of  Scott's Subaru.

About a week later, I was at work talking to a guy that was doing genealogy and he told me his family was from Ohio, and his great-grandfather traveled through Batavia, NY on his way to visit New England.

I said, "I was just in Fremont, OH."
He said, "What were you doing there?"
I said, "Visiting the Hayes Presidential Center."
He said, "That's my great-grandfather, Rutherford B. Hayes."

You just never know who your going to meet.
