Situation in Oaxaca, Mexico deteriorates

1 Situation in Oaxaca deteriorated significantly yesterday as the Federal Police forces of the PFP clashed against the radical group in protest APPO (Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca).  After a six hour clash near Oaxaca's UABJO University the Police had to go in retreat.

As Mark in Mexico, an American living in Oaxaca, reports in this very detailed and articulated blog post, the protestors had much better weapons and outnumbered the police.  The PFP police as reported by Mark were basically trying to dissolve the riot without much weapons versus the collection of all kinds of weapons held by the APPO members.

This conflict has been growing for some time as the Federal Government was trying to avoid it an make it a local conflict.  It is too late now and the APPO has grown too radical and too powerful to be overlooked.  Fox is on the last days of his Administration.  Will he fix this for once and for all?

But how could he? He hasn't been able to fix anything in is government. Every single thing was exploding in his hands. Remember Obrador's case, remember the thing you want. I ask myself how could Fox fix this at all?

Chava,

I am unfortunately as pessimistic as you on this one. Fox seems to be taking this with a rather hands off approach. It will seem to be heading straight into Felipe Calderon's hands for resolution.
