Interview with Cody Weathers
by Memphis Evans

Cody Weathers operates the website Torch & Bacon, which documents in copious if occasionally intentionally inaccurate detail his participation in several exciting, engaging, emotional, and harmonically fascinating music projects including bands, fake bands, string quartets, art music groups, percussion ensembles, and bands so secret their members don't know they're in bands. If you are not familiar with his work, don't worry. A link or two will be provided for you at the end of this article. With and without his main band Flip Nasty, Cody has released over forty CDs and approximately that many pretend interviews in which he is both himself and the interviewer. Here I turn the tables on Mr. Weathers and write both parts of a pretend interview with him all by myself.

Memphis Evans: Hello. I'm here with Cody Weathers, known to millions around the world as the leader of Flip Nasty. Of all the bands that rose to fame in the wake of Jerry Garcia's death, Flip Nasty has had the greatest commercial success and stayed together the longest, outlasting and outselling Phish, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, and Widespread Panic put together. His side projects include…

Cody Weathers: Uh, I hate to interrupt and if you've read my website you'll know that I hate even more to correct something that is not true, but I have to say that none of that is true.

ME: What do you mean?

CW: Flip Nasty broke up in 2001. We sold a total of maybe a thousand albums. If I had to guess, it sounds like you're describing the Dave Matthews Band.

ME: The what now?

CW: The Dave Matthews Band. They have that post-Grateful Dead, meandering jam, stoner trust fund fans thing nailed down and have sold millions of albums, released a bazillion live albums to rabid fans, etc.

ME: Then why have I never heard of them? That sounds like you're describing Flip Nasty!

CW: I can assure you I'm not.

ME: (Checks internet, listens to Dave Matthews Band) Oh God. Oh, no! I knew I should not have accepted the mission to negotiate Federation mining rights to Halkan's dilithium crystals. I have obviously entered an evil mirror universe where this Matthews person occupies your role in Terran society. This is a tragedy. God, his voice! Ish! Has no one noticed his voice?

CW: Now I really, really don't know what you're talking about.

ME: C'mon. Transporter accident? Mirror Universe? Star Trek: The Original Series episode 39 "Mirror, Mirror"? I can't believe you call yourself Nerd Rock.

CW: This interview is over and I'm a little embarassed for you.

ME: Well, at any rate everyone should work hard to decrease the popularity of this terrible "Matthew's Band" and buy at least one Flip Nasty album, most probably 1995's very catchy Guitool, which in my universe went septuple platinum and includes "Best of Days", the #1 single that catapulted the band into the international spotlight. I am going to go try to get into another transporter accident.

While I return to Halkan, you should probably:

Buy "Best of Days", the alternate universe #1 hit at iTunes.
