Rittmeister Hans von Hammer (Skill Point Costs: Hotrods and Guns)

Total Character Points: 61
Total Skill Points: 160

In the skies above World War One's muddy battlefields, no one frightened Allied fighter pilots more than Hans von Hammer, nicked-named alternatively "The Hammer of Hell" and "The Enemy Ace." Soldiers on both sides of the war both feared and respected this German officer who took to the new form of aerial warfare as if he had been born for nothing else. With over 80 confirmed kills in his bloodr-ed Fokker Dr-I, he was one of the greatest pilots of his time, and he was widely viewed viewed as a coldhearted predator who lived for nothing but prowling the Killer Skies.

Von Hammer, however, was not comfortable with his reputation. He viewed himself as a warrior performing his duty to his country, and he did not take any particular pleasure in shooting down other pilots. Von Hammer did what his duty required, and he did it within the confines of a strict code of chivalry and honor that was recognized only among Aces of his own stature. As such, the more fearsome his reputation as a combat pilot grew, the more isolated from those around him he became. Eventually, he found only companionship with a wolf he befriended while hunting in the Black Forest.

Von Hammer spent four years in battling above Europe, but relocated to China in the waning days of World War One to assist in the evacuation of German diplomats and military personnel there. It is known that he clashed with Chinese warlords, but otherwise the later years of the Hammer of Hell are shrouded in mystery and legend.

*Flunkies: Schmidt the Orderly

Total Character Points: 12
Total Skill Points: 10

This loyal servant is both a blessing and boon to Hans von Hammer. He is a dilligent footman, bulter, and personal secretary, but he is blind to the discomformt felt by Von Hammer over the celebrity he has gained as a killer. Schmidt is an endless source of effusive praise for Von Hammer--both to the Enemy Ace's face and to anyone who will listen--and he is the one who sees to it that an accurate count of Von Hammer's kills is maintained.

Von Hammer flies what at the time was a cutting-edge war machine--a tri-winged, wood-ribbed and papercovered propeller-driven aircraft. The three-wing design gave the airplane unequalled manoeuvrability.

Hans von Hammer first appeared in Feburary 1965 issue of Our Army At War (#151) in a tale titled "Enemy Ace." He was the creation of the prolific writer Bob Kanigher, and most of his adventures over the next 30 years were illustrated by Joe Kubert (who later also wrote a number of them). Other legendary artists that worked on the Enemy Ace tales were Russ Heath, Frank Thorne, and Jim Aparo. The earliest tales of Von Hammer have recently been reprinted in hardcover, and is available from Amazon.com. I can't recommend this book enough, if you're a fan of comics, war stories, or WWI air combat. Enemy Ace stands among some of the best war coomics ever created.
